PRADAXA BACKGROUND

Pradaxa (dabigatran elexilate mesylate) is a blood thinner which received FDA approval in 2010.   It was seen as an alternative to warfarin drugs which required regular blood tests to maintain proper prescription levels.   Pradaxa’s use steadily increased since its FDA approval in the U.S.

INTERNAL BLEEDING AND HEART ATTACK HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY PRADAXA

Pradaxa, a blood thinner has been found to increase a person’s risk of heart attack. Pradaxa is an anticoagulant drug prescribed to help those diagnosed with atrial fibrillation to reduce the risk of stroke.  Atrial fibrillation is a heart condition where the upper chambers of the heart fail to contract.   When this occurs blood can become stagnant and blood clots can occur.  Over 2.6 million U.S. citizens alone have been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AFib). Pradaxa is a direct thrombin inhibiting drug and its purpose is to prevent heart attacks by reducing the body’s ability to form blood clots.  Medical studies have shown and the FDA has warned internal bleeding can occur due to the use of Pradaxa causing a heart attack (myocardial infarction) in patients who are taking it.

MEDICAL STUDIES HAVE ESTABLISHED A  RISK OF HEART ATTACK WITH TAKING PRADAXA

On January 9, 2010, the Archive of Internal Medicine published a study on the risk of heart attack associated with taking Pradaxa.  The Cleveland Clinic, which conducted the study, indicated that for patients taking Pradaxa a heart attack is 33% more likely than for patients taking other blood thinners.  This conclusion was determined from the results of seven different studies, which followed over 30,000 patients.

PRADAXA FDA WARNING ABOUT BLEEDING

The FDA issued a safety communication on December 7th, 2011 stating that although it is prescribed to prevent stroke Pradaxa may be more likely to cause life threatening bleeding than other drugs used for blood thinning for patients with AFib.   In summary the FDA warned that while the risk of serious bleeding is known to be a side effect of any blood thinner, post market reports indicate that Pradaxa may cause serious bleeding more often than expected.  The FDA is conducting further research to determine the full extent of the danger’s of this medication.

The law firm of Keberle, & Laufenberg is investigating claims of Pradaxa heart attack and  are interested in speaking with any user or family member who suffered a heart attack while using Pradaxa.  Pradaxa lawsuits allege that the makers of Pradaxa did not adequately warn users of the increased risk. Persons who have suffered a heart attack while taking Pradaxa may be entitled to compensation and should call Attorney Keberle or Attorney for a free, no-obligation consultation.
